Jay Grimes

Jay Grimes began his studies with Joe Pilates in the mid-sixties, and after Joe’s death continued with Joe’s wife, Clara, for another 10 years until her death. Jay began teaching in the original 8th Ave studio in New York and has since taught all over the world. Jay danced professionally, ballet and Broadway for 18 years, and never had an injury. This he attributes entirely to Pilates. Jay is valued in the Pilates community for his experience, humility and integrity in maintaining the work of Joe Pilates. Over the years Jay’s clients have ranged from stars of Broadway and Hollywood, music and opera, to politicians, businessmen and housewives, and Olympic athletes.

Vintage Pilates is the home of Jay Grimes. Built on Jay’s guidance and ignited by his desire to maintain the integrity of Joe Pilates’ intentions, Vintage Pilates has grown from a single studio to a home without walls. Jay gives credit to Joe when a student feels new strength in their body, or understands the system more deeply. But we all know that without Jay’s touch, his words, and his insistence, we never would’ve gained that knowledge.

Sandy Shimoda

Sandy Shimoda is the owner of Vintage Pilates ~ a business that returns to Joe Pilates’ original method of exercise through the guidance of its director, Jay Grimes. Sandy has been teaching movement for 40 years, was certified by Romana Krzynowska, and has worked with Jay Grimes for 20 years.
